Dining Room Revamp

I’ve been such a busy little bee over here, so concerned with the doing, I’m forgetting to SHOW you what I’m doing!

We’re post-holiday weekend this week, and it’s been so jammed pack full of work-work, that I’ve not had a lot of time to blog about the personal work. It’s a huge perk to love what you do, so I’m most certainly not complaining. I love my job, I love my family, I love my home, my animals, and my life. In short, the meaning of Thanksgiving wasn’t lost on me this year. I get it, and I am very grateful and thankful for the blessings that I have inherited and earned.

What? You heard “Blah Blah Blah Happy, Blah Blah Blah Awesome, now GET ON WITH THE PART WHERE YOU SHOW US WHAT YOU’VE BEEN UP TO”? Ah. Impatient are we? Me too. Fine.

So this one took a few days, as you can see from the before picture it was a bit of a hot mess:

Dining Room before

Ok, so let’s discuss. The kid (whom is my 12 year old, Alex) is sitting on a fireplace hearthy-benchy thing.  About four weeks ago, I got the bright idea that I wanted to make a sitting area in front of the fireplace on both sides – in the dining room and in the livingroom.  The end result of that was the appearance that I was preparing for the next episode of Hoarders, Chair Edition.  Which wasn’t cool.  So then I started moving stuff here and moving stuff there, and it never really worked out to look even semi-decent.

I might have mentioned above that I love my job, and I tend to get pretty immersed into it. So, during the day, I’m impervious to anything outside of work unless it’s hungry or bleeding. Nights are spent on homework, hugs, cuddles and sometimes more work. The point of course is, this little before picture up above here? Yeah. 3 weeks worth of that sitting, just like that.  It was like the swamp of furniture sadness.  It was bad.

And here we have the after.  Instead of using the original pub table I had, (which didn’t seat a family of 5) I pulled the old drop leaf plank table from my Hoarder’s stock, and put that up. I moved the new buffet (also from my Hoarder’s stock) in, even though it’s not done yet.  I’ll write a leetle tutorial on how I get free crap this week. Pinky swear. And I’ll show you what I have, and maybe we can toss some ideas on what I’m going to do with it.

Anyway. More on the transformation: The bench behind the table isn’t really a bench. It’s a big ole board I spray painted white (Krylon, you are my hero) and tossed some pillows on.  The bamboo rug apparently was rolled backwards, and that sucker won’t stay down to save my soul. I taped it even.  Tape and cork floors are not friends. At all.

Dining Room After...For Now

Buffet After

Table After. For NowAlright, the table.  I got this table for 10.00 at a garage sale. It’s solid, and functional, and other than it’s odd salmon color, I like it a lot.  The chairs at the ends of the table I picked up when I bought my desk on Craigslist for free.  They’re a weird leafy pattern with cherry painted arms/legs.  That’s changing, I just haven’t settled on what it’s changing to yet.  The chairs on the left were free, and Mandi and I scored those on Craigslist’s Free in Lansing last Saturday.  They’re solid oak, a bit wobbly but will reupholster, paint and firm up just perfectly.

I don’t know what color I’m going to paint the table yet. And because I don’t know that, I don’t know what fabric I’ll be using on the chairs and what curtains I’ll be putting up, or what I’ll be doing to bastardize (or bring immense beauty to) the buffet.  I also plan to paint the bamboo rug. Jury is out on that too.

It just wants to be a real bench.

So, anywho. The problem is that I have been sifting through Pinterest, BHG, HGTV, all the blogs, and…I can’t find the room that makes me gasp. When I find it, I’ll know. I’m working on it.  I want the downstairs done ASAP so I can stop with the anxiety attacks every time the doorbell rings.

Possibilities:

Buffet: It’s very pretty wood, but a bit damaged. I could sand it and restain, or I could paint. Or maybe a mix of the two. I definitely want to paint the inside of the shelves and the back because it’s just so, so dark.  But, then do I paint, or do I use fabric?

Table: I almost want to go all fire engine red on that sucker and distress it. Almost.  Other thoughts are a dark navy, distressed, and then cover the chairs in navy/white.

Bench: It really wants to be a real bench.  I’ll build it some legs. Every bench deserves legs.

Rug: I’d really like to break out the Vintage Revivals (see the rug in that post) technique and paint it.  And roll it the opposite way for a week.

Anywho. Enough to chew on for today!

Organizing The Garage: Challenge Day 3

So, my garage has been a hot mess for several weeks. I’ve been working on some projects (which we’ll reveal later) and they were all parked square in the middle of my garage. Then, the garage door was already broken (hubby got all “fast-hand-luke” on it and tried shutting it before actually getting the car in all the way) so leaves made their way in around my fabulous projects.

Here’s the before:

Garage before organizing

It’s blurry because I don’t want you to see how  bad it really is. :)

Garage before organizing

We’re running a massive save the leaves from burning project.  Leaves are organisms too, you know. These are the chosen ones.

Garage before organizing

Wait, garages aren’t meant to be the place where old furniture and toys come to die?

Garage after cleaning and organizing it

A car might actually fit in here again. Interesting.  Let’s see if I can make that continue for more than a day.

Garage after cleaning it. Epic fail #1

So, funny story. I used tarps. Which is evidenced by the lovely shapes in the floor.  Redidit 101: Don’t paint outside your tarp. Or when the wind is blowing. Or, here’s a fun idea. USE MORE TARP.

Garage after cleaning and organizing

And now, we can fit the car in, the projects are on the side (where they belong until I can get to them) and my husband is a lot less pissed at me for messing with his mojo.

Nice.

What’d you do this weekend? Send us pics and we’ll post them!

DIY Silhouettes Gallery

A few months ago, I ran across an image on Pinterest, and didn’t repin it.  It haunted me for months.  I couldn’t find it, but I wanted to do something like it – and alas, I finally broke down and did it.  The image was a silhouettes gallery on BHG.com.  To this day, I can’t find the image on BHG.  However, I did finally find the image that has haunted my dreams:

Sexy Silhouette Wall Art DIY Style

I know, right? How freaking cute is that?

So I decided I wanted one for my family.  First, I collected frames from random thrift stores. Goodwill, Volunteers of America, Craigslist and Garage Sales.

Picture frame ovalBeauties, aren’t they? Especially the 1970 plastic wood look frame.

First order of business after getting the frames I had picked out home and situated? Tear those suckers apart.  I pulled out pictures from them, took out glass, tossed them all in the sink and scrubbed them down with regular ole Dawn Dish soap.

TIP: Set aside any pictures or backing that was in the frames to begin with. This makes a great template for your fabric.

THEN…

I spray painted them.  I went to Hobby Lobby and bought five colors of Krylon Spray Paint (all Glossy): Emerald Green, Yellow, Plum, Silver, Light Blue, and then some white primer.

Painting the frames

I had a heckuva time getting that orange circle one to cover. I ended up with the “friggits”, and painted it blue.

AFTER THAT…

I pulled out the fabric that I had picked out at Hobby Lobby.  When I went to the craft store, I knew I wanted to get three fabrics that matched color-wise but were a bit different.  I got a yard of each.  While I was there, I also picked up a yard of black felt.

I pulled out the fabric, and decided which fabrics I wanted to go to which frames.  From there, I used the original backing to the frame as a template to cut out that fabric.  I cut out the largest frames first, and then the smaller frames last.

Finally, I placed them in the frame, and hot-glued the fabric down to the backing so that it would fit in the frame snug.

Now we’re getting somewhere. How cute are they? They WANT to be on my walls. They NEED to be on my walls.

NOW…

Silhouettes? Right. This is a silhouette project. I almost forgot with all those adorable colors.  So the next step is to take out your iPhone, Droid, Camera, stone and chisel, or whatever tool of choice is yours for recording history onto something tangible.  Ask your subject to stand, shoulder to the wall and get a decent shoulder up photograph of them.

TIP: If you have boys, they will do something heinous every time a camera lens points their direction.  Do not be discouraged. Grab some hair gel to smooth down the scary fly-aways, and have fun with it.

Print the image.  It’s ok if they have smudges on their face, or a John Cena shirt on. No one will know.  When you print – choose the size that corresponds with your printer. I got some really funky sized frames, but for the most part, I used 8×10 print settings.

Once you’ve printed the image, cut it out. For the shoulder part, remember that you want that little dip at the bottom to be longer in the front of the image than on the back.

Next – flip it over. It’s so much nicer to cut black from white than black from dark.  So, when you flip your printout over, it’s nice and stark white and you’ll see what the finished result will be.

And finally, use that white cutout as your template on the felt.  Use sharp scissors, because nothing sucks quite as bad as trying to cut eyelashes and lips on felt with old, dull scissors.

It should look a little something like this when you’re done:

No need to hot glue your silhouettes onto the fabric – they stick by themselves.  Just pop them on and there you go!

Hope you love it!

Plan Your Type-A Activities

So, this month we’re talking about organizing, getting our proverbial crapola together, and giving everything a clean, happy home inside our home. I probably don’t need to sell you on why this is a good idea. Heck, I KNOW it’s a good idea. It’s just so overwhelming!

But, it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what I’m doing to start the party:

1.) Dig out a notebook. (I know you have one. We all have one. Because we want to be organized, we think buying notebooks will somehow make this happen by osmosis.)

notebook

2.) In that notebook, write out all the rooms in your home, and then the problem areas, or systems that aren’t working for each room. Like this:

Organization list

3.) Now that you have identified the problem areas, now, create a page (or 2) for each room. On your page, list the area you noted, and then what you’re going to do about it.

After you’re all finished with the writing portion of it (mine was 19 pages long, for the love of God), now you’ve got a game plan. Start checking one of those issues off a day. Two if you’re feeling spunky and as many as you can do if you’re a super star.

We can do this. The first step to a gorgeous house is knowing where all your stuff goes, and having it actually be where it’s supposed to be. It cuts out the clutter, kills the blahs, and leaves a ton of time for you to awesome up the space with your creatvity!

Organize THIS. A 30 Day Challenge

Let’s begin the blogging frenzy with something we all want, but something we (or at least I for darn sure) rarely do. Organizing. I want to be Martha Stewart (minus the awesome felony), I truly do. But, that would require me to not be lazy, and actually take things and put them where they belong, the moment they leave my hands.

Which, is precisely what I’m challenging myself (and you) to do. For the next 30 days, pick one project a day, photograph a before, clean/organize it, and then take an after and submit.

Today, I start with my desk. Let’s take a looksie, shall we?This was totally staged for this post. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

This was totally staged for this post. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. :)

Messy Desk 2Because I care so much about YOUR experience, I even dug up some laundry samples and a half eaten bag of chips just to include in the picture. Those TOTALLY weren’t there before the shoot. Totally.

Once upon a time, there was a clean desk. It had a filing system, little partitions to keep things orderly, and then a horrible, horrible discombobulation fairy arrived and did this to it…

Organizing. It's good for the soul.My desk is wood.  It has sort of a parquet top.  I learned that today. :)

It's clean. CLEAN I say.Mama Joyce is my Sunshine.  I heart her.  Mucho.  And with my new clean drawers in my desk, there’s even space for the yummy treats she sends me!

Finally.Files are meant to be used.  You put things in them you’d like to keep. Like paid (or unpaid) bills. Vet records. Doctor-y stuff. Kids report cards.  Not the top of the box from the last time you had takeout.

So, the moral of the story is if we take care of what we already have, 15 minutes a day – just one thing, soon, all our stuff will be taken care of.  All of it. How awesome is that?  Send us your organization project and we’ll celebrate it’s clean-ness with you!

Hiya

Well, hi there.  I’m Shannon, she’s Mandi and this is our new addiction blog.  Nice to meet’ya.

What can I expect, you ask? Well, I am so glad you asked. Projects, tutorials, epic fails, even more epic wins, how-to’s, a lot of drool due to our excessive Pinterest addictions, give aways, contests, linky parties and challenges, to name just a few things off the top of my head.

We’re hoping to do a good job, nay – a GREAT job of journaling our exploits into the dangerous waters of DIY Decor on the cheap.

Who the heck are we? Oh. Yeah. Well, read on. I’ll try to keep that story short, as I’d rather you get to know us as we go – but here’s a starting point…

Mandilynn (aka. Mandi) is a young mom of the key-uuuu-test little baby girl in the known universe.  Mandi is all shacked up with my brother, Cj in a home that he bought on foreclosure for a whopping 15k. (Yes, that’s right. I didn’t miss a 0 anywhere.)  With that much of a discount, you can bet there’s some work to be done. Cj handles the scary parts (like dry wall and drinking and wiring) and Mandi handles the cute parts (like painting and finding and making/redoing fabulous furniture and accessories to turn her house into a home.)

I (Shannon) am mother to three boys, Logan, age 6, Sam, age 9 and Alex, age 12, am married to the Jolly Green Giant (he’s 6’7″), and have a menagerie of critters running about.  Jas and I bought our house in late February 2011.  In early March 2011, Jason had open heart surgery. He is 30.  A week after that, Jason lost his job.  We decided there’s no time like the present for him to go back to college, get that med degree, which will allow us to breathe and live our lives eventually.  So, I am now paying beaucoup bucks for a great big awesome house, and my big dreams of decorating it, BHG style on a BHG budget have been redefined by the inspiration I found on Pinterest, Vintage Revivals and so many other awesome blogs.

We hope that you enjoy your travels here at redidit and we wish you much inspiration, much patience, and a killer eye for a killer deal.
